Clinics and Educational School Concerts, elementary through college level:

Tour of World Musics Concert:

Content varies somewhat according to the educational needs of the particular school and musicians available.  Particular instruments are used as a way to look into particular musical cultures.  For example, the program typically uses the marimba to discuss African and Japanese music and culture, the Steel drum to discuss the music and culture of Trinidad and Tabago, and various Latin American percussion instruments to discuss particular Latin American musics and cultures.  The concert format is structured to allow Ian to bring in international guest musicians who may only be in the area for a limited time but have a great deal to offer students.

Tour of World Musics Residency:

The ideal situation is for Ian and other musicians to be in residence for at least one week before the concert.  This way students can be fully integegrated into the Tour of World Musics Concert.  Depending on the grade level of students, Ian can provide complimentary curriculum material in language classes (Ian is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese), history classes (Ian has a history degree from Pomona College), computer classes (sound design, music programming, MIDI, etc.), audio classes, drumming classes, and band where Ian can bring in original arrangements for the band to play and instruct students in playing techniques and styles from around the globe.

Tour of World Musics Demonstration Lecture:

Private Lessons:

WHY STUDY PERCUSSION WITH IAN?

For beginning and intermediate students, the study of drums and percussion offers an enjoyable way to make and understand music and to build self-esteem and discipline. More importantly, it offers the opportunity to develop skills in the rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic spheres of music, making it a uniquely balanced approach to becoming a well-rounded musician. It is also excellent for developing coordination. It can even be a key to admissions and scholarships to top colleges because they always need percussionists in their orchestras and bands. Lesson curriculum is tailored to the individual interests of students, and live accompaniment is used frequently to provide a complete lesson with practical application.

For advanced and professional level students, Ian has the depth of experience to take them to the next level, especially in the areas of jazz and Latin drum set and steel pan playing.
